Let`s Figl! When the snow conditions are no longer ideal for skiing in spring, the Figl season begins. Every year from April 1st, the Figl season starts on the Nordkette.
"Figl" is the short form of firn gliders on short ski-like boards, which are ideal for spring snow conditions. They were invented by Emo Johann Heinrich from Innsbruck, who patented the Figl in the middle of the 20th century. With the Figln, you can speed through "firn" and "sulz" when the season in most ski resorts is already over. Figln is a legendary highlight in the spring calendar, especially on the Nordkette.
The firn gliders are around 50 to 60 cm long. They are made of light metal sheet or wood. The firn gliders are available in two different binding variants. The traditional universal binding is suitable for all common mountain and hiking boots. The plate binding is made for use with ski touring boots or ski boots and needs to be adjusted to the respective boot size.
When skiing with firn gliders, in contrast to the conventional ski technique, you use a strong back position and control the firn gliders more by shifting your weight forwards and backwards.
