Unique High-Altitude Adventure on 7 Peaks
The Innsbruck Fixed Rope Climbing Route was built in 1986. The best of the best have climbed on these rocks including mountain legend Hermann Buhl and also Hannes Gasser, who this route is named after. Climb in the footsteps of these climbing greats and experience unique mountain adventure. The route was renovated by Innsbruck’s Alpine School in 2008.
The Innsbruck via ferrata and the Geierwally practice via ferrata are open since June 18 2023.
Innsbruck Via Ferrata
Section 1
The starting point of the climbing route is just a few minutes away from the Hafelekar Station / Top of Innsbruck. The ridge leads over the Seegruben, Kamin and Kemacher peaks and on to the Langen Sattel (Long Saddle). From this point you can make your descent via the Kärntnersteig to the Seegrube Station in approximately 1 hour or you can continue to section 2. Overall walking time: 4 hours
Section 2
Section 2 has an overall walking time of approximately 3 hours. Continuing on from Langen Sattel, the climb takes you over the wide Grasrücken onto the eastern Sattel Peak and to the beginning of the secured ropes of section 2.
Then via the western Sattel Peak to Frau-Hitt-Peak. From this point, you can descend via the Schmidhuber trail to the Seegrube or to Höttinger Alm.
Equipment Rental
From 1 July, via ferrata equipment (via ferrata sets, climbing harnesses, helmets) can be rented daily at the Nordkette Shop in the station building on the Seegrube. We recomment the use of protection gloves (not included in the rental set).

Photo ID will be deposited as a deposit. Rental costs for all equipment: € 25,- per day.

- B and C levels of difficulty (partly C/D)
- A good level of fitness, sure-footedness and a head for heights are strictly necessary
- The route is split into 2 sections. There are 2 official descents (At the end of section 1 and at the end of section 2)
- Please respect the environment and do not litter
- The last cable car leaves the Seegrube Station at 5.30pm (June-September 6.30 pm).
Safety:
- You are entering high-alpine terrain. Full climbing equipment including helmet, harness, ferrata set and sturdy shoes are an absolute must!
- A good level of fitness, sure-footedness and a head for heights are strictly necessary
- Due to the length of the climbing route, it is essential to wait for safe weather conditions before commencing your climb. Do not attempt to climb the route in stormy weather conditions
- Attention: There is no official emergency descent! Official descents are located at the Langen Sattel (Long Saddle) at the end of section 1, and at the Frau Hitt Sattel (Frau Hitt Saddle) at the end of section 2!

- The segments of the route are marked in different colours at the steel anchor points. In case of an accident, inform the emergency services of the segment you are located in.

Climbing Arena
It takes about 20 minutes to get from the Seegrube Station to the Nordkette Climbing Arena. There are approximately 40 tours which are mainly single-rope routes at the UIAA difficulty levels 4 – 9, which means they are suitable for both beginner and advanced-level climbers.
