Discover the Victor Franz Hess measuring station and the new Marietta Blau ground station on Hafelekar.

Science in the High Mountains - In 1931, University Professor Victor Franz Hess founded the world’s first high-altitude laboratory for cosmic ray research on the Hafelekar. In 2025, the Marietta Blau quantum optics ground station was also established on the Hafelekar. It is connected via fiber optics to the quantum optics laboratories at the University of Innsbruck.

During Science Night at the Top of Innsbruck, staff from the University of Innsbruck will provide detailed explanations of the research areas of cosmic rays, atmospheric radiation, and space-based quantum communication.

Guided tours will be offered hourly from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM.

Meeting point: Exit at the Hafelekar mountain station (To arrive on time at Hafelekar: Take the cable car from Innsbruck – Altstadt station no later than 45 minutes before the tour; take the cable car from Hungerburg no later than 30 minutes before the tour)

A separate ticket is required for the ascent and descent.

Information for Leisure Ticket holders: The Leisure Ticket is valid for Science Night. However, a reservation for the guided tour is still required.
